Needtobreathe ‘The Reckoning’: suck it, Kings Of Leon

With Needtobreathe’s latest record, The Reckoning, I thought I had lost it and started listening to a band that sounded like Kings Of Leon (it’s late in the year and we all get a little tired, mmmkay). I guiltily admitted this to a friend who told me (without any provocation) that these guys sounded way better than KOL. Booyah! My street cred is back!

After that debate was over, I turned around and tried to change the music to something else. And, well, I just couldn’t so it – this album’s too damn good!

The Reckoning is 14 tracks of Nashville rock that is so emotive and beautifully sculpted it almost evokes tears.

My three favourite tracks can be used to illustrate what applies to the whole record:

“Drive All Night” – acoustic guitar and soft drumbeat set the eponymous driving rhythm that softly supports lead vocals that wipe the floor with most other vocalists to ever come out of Nashville. Chorus is catchier than herpes is in Pretoria.

“Slumber” – Carefully measured vocals that work in harmony with a memorable backbeat. Instead of a catchy chorus, the anthemic melody carries the song throughout.

“Devil’s Been Talkin’” – a Southern howl rises to a perfect pop chorus. The subtle backbeat still manages to pack a 1-2 punch that’ll stick with you all day.
